RMU started in a garage in Frisco, CO. There, a group of skiers decided to build a product to meet their own demands. Now their selection has expanded to so much more.
RMU
The perfect pair of skis can really make or break your adventure down the mountainside. The passionate and innovative ski gurus behind RMU get this and whatever experience you're looking for on the slope, they have a ski for that. The small, Breckenridge-based brand has built a community of like-minded skiing enthusiasts who not only want to experience the exhilaration of slicing a path through fresh powder, but they also want to understand the mechanisms behind the gear propelling their favorite sport.
The company offers a quality range of ski equipment that includes award-winning, responsive and versatile skis. RMU's skis perform as great as they look and the brand is passionate about delivering new innovations, on-trend designs and partnerships with top athletes and other companies that are in-the-know when it comes to getting the most out of your time on the mountain.
RMU wasn't a business venture that began as a CEO's idea for amassing more wealth, or even necessarily the result of a simple love for gliding down the mountainside over a layer of new snowfall. Rather, RMU is the culmination of a deep and intense shared interest among friends to learn and understand how things work. This thirst for knowledge was squarely focused on their favorite sport, hobby and pastime: skiing.
Founded in 2008, RMU was the brainchild of founder Mike Waesche and a close-knit group of friends. Like many avid skiers, the friends wanted to know more about the science and materials behind the equipment they relied on to get them down the slopes, and this quickly grew into a desire to attempt building their own prototype. In the beginning, the venture was only meant to be a fun and interesting side project, not a full-blown business. In fact, the friends' earliest attempts at producing a ski were far from successful, but the fuse was ignited and there was no turning back.
The business didn't immediately take flight, but instead slowly grew as Waesche and friends held down full-time jobs and worked on perfecting their prototype in their spare time. Once they had learned the art of producing quality and functional skis, the brand found local Colorado business in the form of friends trading cases of beer for RMU gear. This around-town, word-of-mouth business is partly how the company gained its name. The business partners became known as the guys building skis under the Rocky Mountains, hence the name Rocky Mountain Underground.
The company hit a turning point in 2011 when it won an ISPO award for innovation in design. With newfound notoriety and increased interest from potential customers, it was time for the team behind RMU to focus on creating a full-fledged business. The company continues to operate out of Breckenridge, CO, and holds on to its sense of community and ideas of passion, ingenuity and inclusiveness in the sport.
